Why your data should never be behind a paywall
Outrep's rule for what Pro can gate: intelligence and depth, never your data or your speed. What that means for export, import, history, and the free tier.
There is one line in Outrep’s plan that every pricing decision is checked against: the gate is on intelligence and depth, never on your data or your speed.
It is easy to say and it costs something to keep. Here is what it means in practice.
What is never gated
- History. Unlimited workouts, unlimited exercises, unlimited custom exercises. There is no “last 30 days” on the free tier.
- Export. Profile → Data exports a CSV with one row per set, in the same layout Hevy uses so it opens in Hevy, Strong and any spreadsheet, or a JSON with everything: workouts, routines, records and profile. Free, unlimited, no account.
- Import. Hevy and Strong CSVs import in one tap, exercises matched to the library, duplicates skipped on a re-import. Free. This is the switching-cost killer, and charging for it would defeat the point.
- Speed. Logging a set is a tap on the check. The number pad is inline, there are no modals, and “undo” replaces “are you sure?”. None of that is behind a subscription and none of it ever will be.
- The watch. Standalone logging, the rest timer with its haptic, the mirror to the phone. Free.
- Plate calculator, warm-up sets, rest timer, the basic chart. Free.
- Sync of one account. Optional, and free.
What Pro is
Outrep Pro is the part that thinks and the part that goes deep:
- “Beat last week” on every exercise. Free users get it on the first exercise slot of every workout, as a taste, and the other slots show a “Beat last week with Pro” chip.
- Sets per muscle each week against the 10–20 band.
- Estimated 1RM by rep range, and the PR timeline.
- The program library beyond the free three, and routines beyond six of your own.
- Themes and body photos, as they ship.
$3.99 a month, $29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, or $79.99 once for life. Your first three workouts run with Pro on so the engine hooks before the paywall, no card needed. The paywall opens only from a Pro feature, never on launch.
Why this is the rule
Two reasons, one principled and one commercial.
The principled one: what you lifted is a record of your life. An app that holds it hostage is asking you to pay rent on your own past. A lifter who leaves should leave with everything, in a format the next app reads.
The commercial one: the export exists, but the intelligence does not travel. The engine reads your history to decide what you lift today; the longer you log, the better the targets. That is a reason to stay that does not need a lock on the door.
The receipts
- The app reminds you when your only copy is on one phone: “Never exported. Your data lives only on this device.”
- Profile → Delete all local data removes everything from the phone; Delete account removes every synced row from the server.
- No ads, no ad identifiers, no analytics SDK in the beta. The privacy policy is short enough to read.
- The free tier in numbers: unlimited history and exercises, 6 routines, 3 programs, CSV import, CSV and JSON export.
If you are coming from Hevy or Strong, the switch guide is the whole process. If you are leaving, the export is under Profile → Data, and it is the same button on the free tier as on Pro.
